KATIE NOONAN – Breathe In Now

(Festival Records)

> Noonan provides a deeper insight to a George classic.

Katie Noonan’s most recent offering Songbook is a quite interesting bag. I concerted my efforts on probably the most intriguing track on the album, a reimagining of the George staple Breathe In Now. Noonan, this time around, has seemed to have stripped everything away, and tried to add a deeper meaning to the tracks, and this has certainly paid off. This new version provides a deeper insight towards the state of mind of the writer when this song was born. The atmosphere created is so thick that the emotion can almost been seen in the air. A haunting quality reins king amongst the host of others that this song possesses.  Although saying this, I must admit that this track is not for everybody’s tastes. It’ll never be evident in a “Triple JJJ Hottest 100” or such things as this, but it has its own space for certain. This song sounds like something straight out of the Victorian era. The new string section makes sure of this, as it barrels along at its own pace. Such tone and emotion can be heard in Noonan’s voice, that this could almost be an acapella and have the same effect. This song is truly unique, especially in today’s market. Regardless of your thoughts or opinion, I’d recommend you give it a listen, if only to expand your perspective.
